1984, Pope John Paul II invited the young people of the world to go on pilgrimage. For the past 16 years we have witnessed this extraordinary procession of youth, beginning in Rome, continuing through Buenos Aires, Santiago de Compostela, Czestochowa, Denver, Manila, Paris, Rome, and now to Toronto for the Seventeenth WYD in July 2002. At the conclusion of the WYD in Rome during the Jubilee year, the Holy Father gave thanks for this great pilgrimage of youth through recent history. Let us reflect for a moment on the meaning of pilgrimage that lies at the heart of the WYD experience. The biblical story is one long pilgrimage, and a model of pilgrimage for believers. Tourists pass quickly through places, but the places pass slowly through pilgrims, leaving them forever changed. |
